Northwich is a town in Cheshire West, in Cheshire, England. It is located at the confluence of the River Weaver and the River Dane, in the heart of Cheshire Plain. The town has a population of around 20,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human settlement in Northwich goes back two thousand years. The area was used during Roman times to extract salt. At that time, a settlement was established here called Condate. Due to salt mining, it suffered from subsidence.
The mining for salt continued for over a thousand years until it became uneconomical in the 19th century. A new method of extracting salt, by pumping hot water into the mines cause widespread subsidence in the town. To withstand ground movements, many houses in Northwich have steel girders on their bases. These could be jacked to keep the house level with any changes to the ground.
Stabilization of Northwich continues into the 21st century, with programmes funded by the English Partnerships to resolve the subsidence issues.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
