Nuneaton is a town in Warwickshire, England. With a population of 72,000 people (2012 estimate), it is the most populous town in the Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth. The River Anker flows through Nuneaton. The nearest city is Coventry, about 14 km away.

Nuneaton developed in the 12th century around a Benedictine nunnery. Much of it was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century by King Henry VIII. Nonetheless the foundations of the nunnery could still be seen today.

Nuneaton was granted a market charter in 1233. It permitted it to hold a weekly market that is still ongoing today. It was just a small market town until the 17th century, when mining in Warwickshire made it one of the largest towns in the county.

Nuneaton is famous for being the birthplace of 19th century author Mary Anne Evans, who wrote under the pen name of George Eliot. She was born on the Arbury Estate just outside the town. She deliberately used a male pen name to ensure that her writing would be taken seriously, as many female authors of that time were stereotyped into writing lighthearted romances.

Traditionally a center for the textile industry, Nuneaton is today a largely dormitory town to nearby cities such as Coventry, Leicester and Birmingham. The biggest shopping mall in town is Ropewalk Shopping Centre, opened in 2005.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
