Royston is a small town in North Hertfordshire, in Hertfordshire, England. It is on the Greenwich Meridian, about 69 km (43 mi) to the north of London. Royston is in a rural part of Hertfordshire and has a population of around 15,000 people.
According to historians, people have been living in the area arond Royston since the Roman conquest. The Romans built roads to facilitate their access and control of their empire, one of which exists today as Icknield Way.
Royston was originally known as Cruz Roesia or Roisia's Cross. It derived the name from a cross that was erected by a crossroad in the area, around which a settlement developed. The name evolved over time to become Royston by the 14th century.
An Augustinian priory was established by Ralph d'Escures, the Bishop of Rochester, in the 11th century. It was disbanded by King Henry VIII duringthe Dissolution of the Monasteries, and its site was given over to Robert Chester, a gentleman of the bedchamber to Henry VIII.
Today Royston is a small, quiet town. It becomes alive in the last week of September or the first week of October, when it holds the Royston Arts Festival.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
