Sandwich is a historic town in the district of Dover, in Kent, England. Located on the River Stour, it has a population of around 7,000 people (2012 estimate).

Sandwich is of course the town that gives its name to the snack comprising two pieces of bread. It is credited to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, in the 18th century. The earl allegedly ordered his valet to bring him meat between two pieces of bread. This proved to be popular, and the snack became known as sandwich.

The area around on the banks of the River Stour has been inhabited since prehistory. The Romans staged their invasion of Britain by landing here in AD 43. They built a fort at Richborough. During the Saxon period, there was a town on the opposite side of the mouth of the River Stour. It was called Stonar. The town grew to considerable significance but then declined, and by the 14th century, had disappeared almost without a trace.

In 1255, the first captive elephant arrived in England via the Port of Sandwich. It was a gift by the French king to Henry III, and it was taken on foot all the way to the king's zoo at the Tower of London.

In 1560, there was an influx of Dutch settlers. They brought with them skills and farming technique that proved beneficial. They were also instrumental in introducing celebry to England. The Huguenot refugees also brought silk weaving techniques that boosted Kent's textile industry.

Today Sandwich is a quiet English town. It is home to a research and development facility run by Pfizer UK. It was here that Viagra was discovered.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
