Southwold is a small coastal town in Suffolk, England. It is located in Waveney district and faces the North Sea, about 18 km (11 mi) south of Lowestoft and 47 km (29 mi) northeast of Ipswich. Southwold has a population of just about 1,500 people (2012 estimate).
Despite its present small size, Southwold has a history spanning over a thousand years. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. It received its town charter in 1489 from King Henry VII. It was an important fishing port, but the build up of silt and a shingle bar prevented it from becoming a major harbor.
In the 17th century, a number of Puritan families in Southwold were among the emigrants who voted with their feet to leave England, at first for the Netherlands, and eventually for the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America.
One of the famous residents of Southwold was George Orwell, whose real name is Eric Arthur Blair. He spent most of his teenage years here, and returned to live in Southwold when he was in this thirties, living in his parents' house.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
