St Ives, Cornwall is a seaside town on the Celtic Sea coast of Cornwall, England. It has a population of around 11,000 people (2012 estimate). Traditionally a fishing village, St Ives has shifted to focus on tourism as the fishing industry went on a decline.

St Ives was named after 5th century Saint Ia of Cornwall, who was also written as Ives. She was a 5th or 6th century Cornish evangelist who, according to legend, sailed across the Irish Sea on a leaf which grew into a boat. St Ives in Cambridgeshire, in comparison, was named after a different saint, that being the 11th century Saint Ivo.

St Ives dates at least to the 14th century. The oldest inn in town, the Sloop Inn, is dated to 1312, and is still in operations today. The town depended on fishing since medieval times. It was one of the four main shipping ports of Cornwall, alongside Falmouth, Fowey and Penzance.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
