Stockton-on-Tees is a market town on the border between County Durham and North Yorkshire, England. It has a population of 84,000 people (2012 estimate) within a borough of some 191,000 people.

Stockton-on-Tees, as its name suggested, was established by the bank of the River Tees. Its history goes back to Anglo-Saxon times. It received a charter to be a market town in 1310, enabling it to operate a market every Wednesday.

Stockton-on-Tees has a shipbuilding tradition going back to the 15th century, although it was only in the 17th and 18th centuries that the industry experienced rapid growth. In the beginning, it carried out small-scale industries such as rope making. This developed into more ambitious heavy industries such as iron making and engineering in the 18th century.

The first Big Ben, the bell at the Palace of Westminster, London, was cast in Stockton-on-Tees in 1856. Weighing 16.3 tonnes, it was named in honor of Sir Benjamin Hall.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
