Stony Stratford is a town in the Borough of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, England. It is on the northern part of Buckinghamshire, across the River Great Ouse from Northamptonshire. It has a population of around 12,000 people (2012 estimate).
The name Straford indicates that it dates from Roman times (as the word means "ford on a Roman road"). It was called Stony Stratford to differentiate it from another nearby town, Fenny Stratford.
Stony Stratford received a charter from King Richard I in 1194 to operate a market. There is still a farmer's market being held here once a month, although the market square itself has turned into a car park.
Stony Stratford grew as a coach stop on the road between London and Ireland via Chester. Inns were established here to accommodate the travelers passing through.

Today Stony Stratford remains a busy market town with its share of restaurants and pubs. The town is believed to be where the term "cock and bull story" originated, as there were public houses in town named The Cock and The Bull, both originally coaching inns. Cock and bull stories are attributed to the unsubstantiated tales passed along by travelers stopping over at Stony Stratford.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
