Stourport-on-Severn is a town in Wyre Forest district in northern Worcestershire, England. Often called simply as Stourport, it is on the River Severn, downstream from Bewdley, to the south of Kidderminster. The town has a population of around 20,000 people (2012 estimate).
Stourport-on-Severn got its name because it was established as a port on the River Stour, which is at the confluence with the River Severn. This was in the 18th century, following the completion of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal in 1772. Predating the town was a hamlet known as Upper Mitton and Lower Mitton, settlements at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Stour.
Right from the start Stourport-on-Severn grew as a river trans-shipment point. This was where goods coming up by canal boats are transferred to the river boats and vice versa. The town central district has a large supporting industry of boat builders, shipyards and foundries.
The completion of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal in 1815 brought a downturn to business activities in Stourport-on-Severn, as the new canal caused traffic to bypass it. After a boisterous boom in the late 18th century, Stourport-on-Severn went into decline and was a shadow of its former self by the early 19th century.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
