Thame is a town named after the
River Thames, located in South
Oxfordshire, England. The name is pronounced "tame", with a silent "h". It presently has a population of about 12,000 people (2012 estimate).
Thame dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It was within the kingdom of Wessex until the Norman Conquest. Under the Normans, the Thame Abbey was established in 1138. The abbey faced suppression under King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, when it saw its church demolished. Still standing today is the abbot's house from the early 16th century.
Thame is the home of Robin Gibb of Bee Gees fame. He and his wife live in the former Abbot's House of the now defunct Thame Abbey.
