Uttoxeter is a market town in East Staffordshire, England. It is about equal distance from
Stafford,
Burton upon Trent,
Derby and
Stoke-on-Trent. Uttoxeter has a population of around 12,000 people (2012 estimate).
Uttoxeter traces its history back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Its name has been spelling in as many as 79 different ways. The oldest form is probably Wuttuceshæddre, meaning "Wuttuc's homestead on the heath". Human settlement in the area goes back even before the Anglo-Saxon period, probably into the Bronze Age. There were also some human activity here during Roman times.
Uttoxeter was granted a market charter in 1308, permitting it to hold a market on Satudays and Wednesdays and an annual fair. The town was the last stronghold of the Royalists during the English Civil War. They eventually surrendered on 25 August, 1648.
Today the economy of Uttoxeter is based on construction, demolition and farming equipment.
