Signs of human activity in the Warwick area can be traced back to the Neolithic period. The town itself was established by the Anglo Saxons. According to the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, it was Æthelflæd, the Lady of Mercia and daughter to King Alfred the Great of Wessex, who established Warwick as a fortified dwelling. This was in AD 914, and it was one of the ten fortifications erected to counter attacks by the Danes. The site of Warwick was chosen for its proximity to Fosse Way, the important medieval transport route, and with the River Avon.
Warwick Castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1068, two years after the Norman Conquest. Built over pre-existing settlement, construction of the castle probably required the demolition of properties on the site.

Warwick was a stronghold of the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. It endured a two-week siege by the Royalists. In 1694 a massive fire destroyed much of medieval Warwick. As a result, most of the buildings in the old town dates from the late 17th century or thereafter.
Population growth in the surrounding region has made Warwick contiguous with Leamington Spa. Together with Kenilwoth and Whitnash, these are now part of Warwick District.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
