Wellington is a town within the borough of Telford and Wrekin, in Shropshire, England. It can be considered as part of the new town of Telford. If counted separately, Wellington would be the third largest town in Shropshire. It has a population of around 22,000 people (2012 estimate).

Wellington dates back at least a thousand years. Its name is said to derive from Weoleahington, which means "village by the temple". The temple in question is a sacred Druid site. Evidence suggests that this site is where present-day All Saints' Parish Church is located.

Wellington was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1244 it was granted a charter to hold a market. An open-sided market hall was built in 1680 but dismantled and replaced with a town hall in the 19th century. The market is still being held today.

The new town of Telford was designed in the 1960s. Within a decade it has grown to envelop Wellington. While the establishment of Telford has created job opportunities, it has also impacted Wellington in terms of its sense of identity and history, and the creation of a separate Telford Town Centre impacted businesses in Wellington negatively.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
