West Midlands county, not to be confused with the West Midlands Region, is a metropolitan county and ceremonial county within West Midlands Region. This landlocked county covers 902 sq km (348 sq mi) and has a population of 2.6 million people.

West Midlands County was created in 1974 from parts of Staffordshire, Worchestershire and Warwickshire. This largely urban county is the location of the City of Birmingham, the City of Coventy and the City of Wolverhampton. Also included within the West Midlands county are the towns of Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall.

In 1986, the West Midlands County Council was abolished, so that now the individual metropolitan boroughs are unitary authorities. The county however continue to exist geographically.

Within West Midlands County are cities whose history goes back to the Middle Ages and before. The city of Coventry has been a wool and cloth manufacturing centre since the Middle Ages, while Birmingham and Wolverhampton have a variety of small industries dating from the 16th century.

Visiting West Midlands County

The biggest city in West Midlands County is Birmingham, which is also the second biggest city in the United Kingdom. You can fly to Birmingham from London as well as from major cities in Europe, landing at the Birmingham International Airport, located in Solihull, about 8 miles to the east of downtown Birmingham.

From the airport, you can take a train to the Birmingham Railway Station, which is a major hub of Britain's rail network, and from there continue to other cities in the West Midlands County.

Latest updates on Penang Travel Tips

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
