Human habitation in the area of present-day Weston-super-Mare goes back to the Iron Age, though the town remains as just a small village right up to the 19th century. That was when it began to develop as a seaside resort. Its developed can be attributed to the construction of the railway line that enables visitors easy access to the towns and cities of the are.

The Bristol Channel has a very large tidal range. At low tide, the water edge is one mile from the seafront, exposing a large expanse of mudflats. The buildings in Weston-super-Mare are built of local stone. Many of these date from the early part of the 20th century and are of the Art Deco style.

Weston-super-Mare saw a decline in visitor numbers since the 1970s. It was not alone. As lifestyle evolved and going to the beach became out of fashion, most British seaside resorts were affected, particularly as foreign destinations became cheap by comparison.
