Whittlesey is a market town in Fenland district, Cambridgeshire, England. Located about 10 km (6 mi) to the east of Peterborough, it has a population of around 15,000 people.

Whittlesey traces its history to the Anglo-Saxon period. Its name is probably derived from Whittle's Ea, meaning "Whittle's Island". The town has formerly spelled Whittlesea and Witesie. As with a number of towns in the Fenland district, Whittlesey was once an island of solid ground surrounded by marshland. The area bears evidence of human settlement going back as far as 1000 BC.

In the 1st century AD, the Romans built the Fen Causeway, a roman road of gravel raised above the marshy fen, linking Denver, Norfolk in the east with Petersborough in the west, and passing through Whittlesey. As such, Roman-era artifacts have been recovered in the area, and as recently as 2010, a Roman skeleton was discovered here.
