Wilmslow is a town in
Cheshire, England, to the south of
Greater Manchester. The town is an upscale neighborhood within the Greater Manchester Urban Area. It has some of the most expensive property prices outside of central London. It has a population of 30,000 people (2012 estimate)
Wilmslow is about 18 km (11 mi) to the south of the Manchester city center. Human habitation in the Wilmslow area goes back some two thousand years. The discovery of the Lindow Man, a preserved bog body in Lindow Moss, near Wilmslow, provides tangible evidence of human presence in the area from that period in time. Wilmslow was just a small village of a few farms until the arrival of the railway in 1843.
Today Wilmslow is home to many celebrities and wealthy businessmen. The clothing company Umbro was founded here, and is still headquartered in the area.
