Windsor is a town in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, in Berkshire, England. It is best known for being the location of Windsor Castle, one of the residences of the British Royal Family. The town has a population of about 30,000 people (2012 estimate) and has some of the most expensive real estate in the country.

Human habitation in the Windsor area goes back to the prehistoric age. Among the Stone Age items that have been discovered in the area include hand axes and flint picks. Also discovered were Bronze Age swords and an Iron Age brooch. There were however little evidence of Roman presence, though that of Anglo Saxon settlement was substantial.

Windsor dates from the Anglo Saxon period. Its name was originally Windles-ore, which means "winch by the riverside". The original settlement is located about 5 km (3 mi) from present-day Windsor. Today it is known as Old Windsor, although formerly it was the original Windsor, and the present town was known as New Windsor. The settlement relocated to New Windsor in the 12th century.

New Windsor has been a "special child" since its founding, granted royal borough status and special recognition. It was no surprise therefore that it was one of the wealthiest towns in the country as early as the 14th century.

Construction of Windsor Castle, the main landmark of the area, began just a decade following Norman Conquest of 1066. Repeated expansion, renovation and restoration carried out on the castle provided employment to the local people as well as drew artisans and craftsmen from London and elsewhere.

Today, Windsor is a popular tourist destination. In addition to the obvious attraction, there are other tourist sights including Legoland and Royal Windsor Wheel.

Visiting Windsor

There are trains to Windsor from London Waterloo station. Journey takes about an hour. If you are driving from London, take the M4 motorway heading west. Leave the motorway at Junction 6 for the A355 heading south. It continues as the A332. Follow signage to the Windsor car park or the Park and Ride car park.
