Wotton-under-Edge is a town on the southern part of the Cotswolds range of hills, in Gloucestershire, England. It has a population of around 6,000 people (2012 estimate).
Wotton-under-Edge dated to the Anglo-Saxon period. It was first mentioned in a royal charter was granted by King Edmund I in AD 840. Its name Wotton means an "enclosure" while "Edge" refers to the limestone escarpment of the Cotswold Edge.
In 1139, Kingswood Abbey was a Cistercian abbey founded in the village of Kingswood near Wotton-under-Edge. The abbey was disbanded during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII between 1536 and 1541, and all that remains of it is its gatehouse.
Visiting Wotton-under-Edge
Coming from London, take the M4 motorway until Exit 19, where you turn off onto the M32 motorway. Almost immediately, turn off the M32 motorway at Junction 1, then at the roundabout head east (9 o'clock turn) on the A4174 road. At the next junction, turn left to the B4058 road and head north till you reach Wotton-under-Edge.
