New Lanark is a World Heritage Site in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was founded in 1786 by Scottish merchant David Dale, who built cotton mills and housing for the mills employees there. Under Dale's son-in-law Robert Owen, New Lanark became the epitome of utopian socialism.

Under Owen, an industrialist and philanthropist, the welfare of the workers, mostly poor people who were employed from Glasgow and Edinburgh, improved tremendously. However, Owen's partners were unhappy with the expenses incurred by his welfare programs, which force him to buy up the property from his partners.

The fame of New Lanark in the 19th century drew many important people to visit it, among them royals, statesmen and reformers. They were impressed to find a clean working environment with a happy, vibrant workforce. Through his effort, Owen was able to demonstrate that, unlike other enterprises at that time, he was able to turn a profit without exploiting his workers.

New Lanark was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 25th session of the World Heritage Committee in Helsinki, Finland, on 11 - 16 December, 2001.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
