Tower of London is the most famous fortress in London that is also recognised as a World Heritage Site. Located on the northern bank of the River Thames, it was founded at the end of 1066 during the Norman Conquest of England.
The name Tower of London refers to the White Tower, an edifice which was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. At that time, it was a symbol of oppression by the occupiers on the locals of London. In its early years, it served as a palace, but later also served as armoury, treasury, menagerid, the Royal Mint, the public records office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.
