Chernihiv (Ukrainian: Чернігів, Russian: Чернигов), also called Chernigov, is a city in northern Ukraine. It covers 79 sq km (30.5 sq mi) and has a population of 302,000 people (2011 estimate).
The city is one of the oldest in cities in Central Ukraine. Its history goes back over a thousand years. It was mentioned for the first time in AD 907, on the Rus-Byzantine Treaty. Its long history has given it many historic sights and beautiful heritage buildings, among them sacred Christian temples that are becoming increasingly popular tourist attractions.
Archaeological excavation has revealed evidence of human settlement in the area around Chernihiv at early as the 9th century. It was the seat of the Grand Principality of Chernigov in the 11th century. That was the golden age for the city, when its population peaked at 25,000 people.
Chernihiv came under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1353. Rule over Chernihiv changed hands a number of times from the 15th to the 17th century. Chernihiv became a city in the Tsardom of Russia following the Treaty of Andrusovo in 1667. The city became part of Ukraine after the Russian Revolution.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
