Gladstone Road is a road that used to run from
Komtar to Carnarvon Circus in
George Town, Penang. It was named after
William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), who served as Prime Minister of Britain for four times, from 1868 to 1874, 1880 to 1885, February to July 1886, and from 1892 to 1894. When he resigned for the fourth time, he was already 84 years old, making him the oldest Prime Minister of Britain.
Gladstone Road in Penang was laid out about the time when George Town began to expand outward across the
Prangin Canal. The attap houses of Koay Kangnga ("Village Across the River") were replaced with brick shophouses and townhouses.
Gladstone Road lasted until the early 1980's, when it was wiped off the map by the
Komtar urban redevelopment project. Among the businesses affected include Ngee Fah Records and
Guan Hoe Co. Carnarvon Circus was also removed, as was the Prangin Road Bus Terminal, replaced eventually by the
Komtar Bus Terminal.
