Golden Phoenix Food Court, Sungai Dua (7 October 2019)
Golden Phoenix Food Court (GPS: 5.35283, 100.30016) is a major hawker centre in Sungai Dua, Penang. It has a wide range of hawker stalls selling most of the popular Penang hawker fare such as Hokkien mee, wantan mee, belachan fried rice, claypot chicken rice, nasi kandar, curry mee, mee goreng, mee rebus, pau, economy rice as well as Japanese teppanyaki sets. In the morning there is also dim sum here.
Golden Phoenix Food Court is located on the ground floor of the Sungai Dua Apartment. Located adjacent to the cafe is Brothers Hair Cut, one of the few Indian barbers with a named signage.

It has been a very long time since I last visited Golden Phoenix Food Court. As I don't have a proper photo of it, I decided to pay it a visit. Also, I wanted to try the wan than mee which was recommended by Easter Yeoh.
I arrived on a Monday morning at 7:30am, and found that the place was rather dead. The hawker centre doesn't even have the name "Golden Phoenix" on its signboard, which is so tiny. Most of the stalls were not operating (could it be due to Nine Emperor Gods Festival, I am not sure). There was a dim sum stall running, and a pan mee stall.
At the far end of the hawker centre I found the Hong Kong Wan Thun Mee stall. Is this the stall Easter talked about? I don't know, but since this is the only wan than mee stall running, I ordered one plate of wan than mee, medium size. The price was RM6.50.
The wan than mee comes with a good amount of char siew. There are three meaty wan thans. The dish was served with pickled green chili. I asked for sambal, but they do not have it. The wan than noodle is very thin.
The taste is okay, but not to the point that I would recommend it. Maybe this is Hong Kong style, as I prefer the local Penang style with black soya sauce. I finished the pickled green chili - maybe an indication that I need a taste booster.
The price of RM6.50 for the medium size plate is certainly on the high side for wan than mee. I can say that the wan than are big and meaty.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
