Golden Phoenix, Hotel Equatorial Penang (5 September 2017)
It is lunch time on Saturday, 26 August, 2017, and we are being hosted for a stay with Hotel Equatorial Penang. Upon arrival at the restaurant, we were ushered into a private room which has a small round table for a cosy couples dining. Our host that evening was the Miss Moon Lee, the Assistant Supervisor, who introduced to us the various dishes that have been prepared, specially for us. We were overwhelmed that the restaurant prepared so many items, even though this meal was only for my wife and me.
The dishes presented to us showcase the artistry of the chefs of Golden Phoenix, led by Chef Denis Wong, the Executive Chinese Chef. It is a combination of popular favourites, new introductions to the menu as well as off-menu items which the restaurant has not yet launched, and we were privilged to be among the first to sample them.
The hotel has prepared an exquisite meal, enough food for a dozen people, even though it is only for my wife and me. We are food lovers, but we are not gluttons. We do not force ourselves to overeat, nor do we want to waste food, so whatever we were unable to finish, we requested the restaurant to pack them up for us. And we got to enjoy them again for the next few days. Yes, few days!
We started off with an appetizer, Sweet Crispy Sliced Beef with Dried Red Chili in Szechuan Style. This is paper-thin sliced beef that is sweet and crispy - and also very spicy! It was a bit plate, and considering there is still so many dishes ahead, we only eat a small amount.
The Seafood Hot and Sour Szechuan Soup is a perennial favourite at Golden Phoenix. I had taken this before at Golden Phoenix before and is one of my favourite Chinese soups here.
All the items make use of the finest ingredients. The fried rice, for example, includes dried scallops and crab meat. The Stewed King Prawn with Prawn Bisque is like a fusion of Chinese and French cuisine, and the prawn bisque I get in French restaurants.
It was such a lovely lunch, and we are most grateful to Hotel Equatorial Penang and Golden Phoenix Restaurant for having invited us to enjoy it. And enjoy it we did!

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
