Granny's Cottage 外婆家 is a restaurant in Gurney Plaza, Penang. It specialises in local cuisine, "the way Granny used to make". The restaurant first opened in 2012. Business was so good that it expanded a couple of years later to include the adjacent shoplot. Although the annex is called Tummy Yummy, it is in fact the same restaurant as Granny's Cottage next door.
Our visit to Granny's Cottage
Dinner at Granny's Cottage, 12 July, 2019
We returned to Granny's Cottage following their makeover.
Although Granny's Cottage offers set meals, the best way to enjoy its food is to order dishes à la carte. My wife and I paid a visit to Granny's Cottage on 28 April, 2017. We were there at the invitation of Mr Chin, who operates the restaurant with his family. It was a great pleasure for us to sit down with Chin, get to know him, and find out how the restaurant got started. The very affable Chin told us how the restaurant got started, and his siblings were also involved in cooking the various items.
The dishes we tried at Granny's Cottage (28 April 2017)
To give us a taste of what Granny's Cottage has to offer, Chin ordered the dishes from the menu, most of which are the restaurant's signature dishes. They include Granny's Special Pork Trotter, Pork Trotter with Vinegar, Kapitan Curry Chicken, Jiu Hu Char, Special Sambal Petai with Prawns and the Bitter Gourd Fried Rice. Here's each item we tried.

I have to say, everything was absolutely delicious. So much so that I had two helpings of rice, to Chin's delight. I told him I genuinely love the food which go very well with hot white rice. And I really wouldn't mind coming back to Granny's Cottage over and over to try other items. I really cannot find any fault with the dishes. If pressed, my own comment is that the Jiu Hu Char is coarser than what I get at home, but then, I am being deliberately nitpicky.
My wife and I enjoyed our meal very much, and hope that in future, Chin might invite us back! Can't wait for that.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
