Granny's Hokkien Mee, Lip Sin Garden (29 July 2013)
Granny's Hokkien Mee (GPS: 5.34199, 100.29412; Chinese: 奶奶福建麵

) is a
Hokkien Mee restaurant in
Lip Sin Garden, Penang. The restaurant started business on 25 July, 2014. Since its opening, the restaurant has seen a large crowd of people trying it for the first time.

We visited Granny's Hokkien Mee for the first time for breakfast on the morning of 29 July, 2014. We learned about it on our Penang Hawker Food Facebook Group when it was mentioned by
Kam Wong. We were not very familiar with the eateries at Lip Sin Garden (apart from Super Tanker Hawker Centre), as we don't often come here for meals (we used to, long time ago, but our routine evolved). I was pleasantly surprised to find so many coffee shops in the area, one next to the other, and all of them crowded with patrons. I have half-expected that Granny's Hokkien Mee, being a "restaurant", might not be opened during breakfast time, and we may have to eat elsewhere. But then we found the restaurant, and not only was it open, it was also crowded.

You can sit within the restaurant or in the open-air courtyard behind the restaurant. In either places there are plenty of tables but most have been taken. We were lucky to come upon one that has been vacated.
Ordering at Granny's Hokkien Mee is by way of filling up the order form. This is similar to that of the
Hou Mei Yuen Pan Mee. The Hokkien Mee comes in three sizes - small, medium and large. You can add-on various ingredients such as spareribes, egg, and other stuff, at additional cost.

At each table is a tray with chopsticks, spoons and a bottle of Hokkien Mee chilli sauce. There is also a few pieces of order form and a pencil.
Having learned our lesson when we ordered too big a bowl, at Tua Wa Kong, this time we decided to order the small bowl, and added on spareribs. For the drinks, I ordered iced coffee while my wife iced barley. The bill came to RM11.70.
And here's how the Hokkien Mee looks like:

I must say, the Hokkien Mee is not bad. Even before our order arrived, we could smell the Hokkien Mee aroma in the air. Our "small" bowl has eggs, prawns, meat,
kangkung and fried shallots, in addition to the mee, bihun and spareribs. The Hokkien Mee is sufficiently spicy that we do not need to add any more chilli paste, though I did add a bit, just to get the taste.
On the whole, I enjoyed my Hokkien Mee breakfast. I would look forward to come here again for Hokkien Mee at another time, though we might not come here regularly - nothing to do with its taste, simply that it's outside our usual routine.
Getting there
Granny's Hokkien Mee is on the ground floor of Taman Lip Sin Block 2, next to MKT Cafe, and facing the main road, Lengkok Nipah.
