Great Grandfather's Tomb Site (3 April 2024)
Great Grandfather's Tomb Site (GPS: 5.44313, 100.30073) is the site of my father's father's father at the
Mount Erskine Cantonese Cemetery. The site was discovered by my second cousins Freddy Tye and Benny Tye a few weeks prior, and when I learned about it, I requested that they show me the site. And so, together with another second cousin, Ewe Cheng, we made the trip to the cemetery.
As it is the Cheng Beng season, the grass and undergrowth have been cleared, making it easier for us to walk around. We determined the location of the grave based on a photograph of the tombstone and its location vis-à-vis that of a grand Hainanese tomb nearby.
I immediately checked the map coordinates for the site, so that we could easily find it again in the future.
Our Great Grandfather's name was Tye Boon Keat. When I heard the name, I was astonished because it is a Hokkien-sounding name. We were supposed to be Taishanese. But then again, the same Chinese characters could be read in any Chinese dialect. Freddy and Benny's grandfather was the eldest son of Tye Boon Keat while my own grandfather was either the second or third son. Ewe Cheng's grandmother was one of Tye Boon Keat's daughter, but we were not clear of the sequence.
