Jalan Gunaratana, George Town, Penang (1 November 2020)
Jalan Gunaratana, or
Gunaratana Road, is a minor road in George Town. It connects
Kampar Road on the end with Solok Terengganu on the other. The road is the location of the
Mahindarama Buddhist Temple, a Sri Lanka-inspired Theravada Buddhist temple in Penang.
Gunaratana Road may have been named in honour of Henepola Gunaratana (1927-), a revered Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist monk who was deeply involved in Theravada Buddhism matters in Malaysia. His name may have been derived from his birthplace, the village of Henepola in Sri Lanka, although he is popularly called Bhante G. "Bhante" means "venerable sir" in Pali.
