Gurdwara Sahib Butterworth

Gurdwara Sahib Butterworth (GPS: 5.39774, 100.37124) is a Sikh place of worship in Bagan Dalam, Butterworth. It is located along Jalan New Ferry, next to the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Gurdwara Sahib Butterworth traces its history to the beginning of the 20th century, when the earliest batch of Sikhs arrived in Butterworth, to work as watchmen for the Straits Trading Company. They and their families were housed in quarters at the Sikh Lines (or barracks) near the company's smelting plant.

The Sikhs working there sought permission from their management to allow them a site to be used their place of worship. This was granted some time in the 1920s. Thus, a makeshift gurdwara sahib was established.

The site of the present Gurdwara Sahib Butterworth was purchased in 1934. On this piece of land the Sikhs built their initial gurdwara, which was just a small, single-storey building. By the 1960s, the Sikh population of Butterworth had outgrown the small temple, so it had to be demolished to make way for a bigger one.

The foundation stone of the present three-storey gurdwara was laid by then Chief Minister of Penang, the late Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee, on 3 October, 1968, and the building was completed three years later. The opening was officiated by then Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Patinggi Abdul Taib Mahmud.
