Gurney Drive Roundabout (1 January 2017)
Gurney Drive Roundabout (GPS: 5.44066, 100.309) is a traffic circus in
Gurney Drive, Penang. It is one of the few coastal roundabouts in Penang that were created more for aesthetics than for functional purposes, similar to the roundabouts in
Queensbay.
Beautification of the Gurney Drive Roundabout was sponsored by a local property company, IJM, which spent about half a million ringgit to construct the centerpiece sculpture, called
Wave of Prosperity. It depicts stylized steel waves with a flight of seagulls. The waves seem to emerge from the center of a fountain.
The Gurney Drive Roundabout is turfed with ornamental Japanese grass (
Zoysia japonica). This fine-blade grass requires high maintenance. However, it is much nicer looking than the coarser carpet grass.
