Today I received a sample batch of chicken lor bak from Hamidou Roll. They wanted me to try their lor bak and give my opinion. I went out to the nearby McDonald's to meet the lor bak lady, who came with two small kids in tow. She gave me two plastic containers of uncooked chicken lor bak, and one batch of cooked chicken lor bak, ready to be eaten. The uncooked lor bak can keep in the freezer for two months.
She told me that she went into the lor bak business which was founded by her father in 1992. In the beginning the lor bak had no name. According to her, her parents let he have the business as she was undergoing a personal crisis. At that time, she was recently divorced and jobless, and had two small kids. As she brainstormed for a name, her five-year-old uttered, "We've lost everything! Everything is gone." As they had nothing left, they needed, "hami doulou", a portmanteau of the Hokkien ha1mik1 ("what") and Cantonese doulou ("something like all doing")
Her five-year-old's remark impressed her, as she had never thought a kid that age could have said such words. The kid tried to motivate the mother to be strong and keep moving ahead for a living. With that motivation, she decided to use those words as the brand of her lor bak.
At time of writing, I haven't tasted the lor bak yet, but judging from the wonderful aroma that filled my car on the way home, I am sure they are going to be very good, and I can't wait to try them soon.
I put the two plastic containers of uncooked lor bak into the freezer. Hamidou Roll told me that they can keep for two months in the freezer. I look forward to having some of the cooked lor bak during lunch afterwards.

3 December, 2016: Today when my wife and I went to the Jelutong Market, we decided to go look for the stall selling Hamidou Roll. We found it at the spot in front of the Mat Doh Yau dessert shop. We were so happy to discover the stall, and the seller was also pleased to see us, that she gave us some curry puffs to take home - that takes care of our lunch today!
