Happy Cafe Duck RiceHappy Cafe Duck Rice (6 March 2016)

I was recently recommended to try the duck rice at Happy Cafe in Taman Pekaka, Sungai Dua, by a member of my Penang Hawker Food Facebook Group. I haven't been to Taman Pekaka in a while, but decided to make it a point to drop by to try out the duck rice this Sunday.

Upon arriving around 11:00 am this Sunday morning (after my own church services), I saw that the roads around the commercial lots of Taman Pekaka to be quite congested. This must be a very happening place. Apart from Happy Cafe, there are coffee shops at each of the four corners of the two rows of roads. They include Subaidah, a 24-hour nasi kandar. In addition, the Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant and U-Soya soy boen shop at nearby Pekaka Square are also doing roaring business. I saw that Pekaka Square has a church, so I believe part of the congestion is attributed to church-goers converging on the area on Sunday.

We managed to find a place to park, and made our way to Happy Cafe. Business was brisk. We saw stalls selling chicken rice, wan than mee and char koay teow, and managed to get a table for ourselves. The people in the next table ordered the char koay teow, which appears quite nice, but we were there to try the duck rice.

Ordering was smooth and the hawker quite friendly, though the boy who brought our order initially brought the wrong order to our table. I ordered a platter of duck, roasted meat (sio3bak3) and barbecued meat (char1sio1), along with the salted vegetable soup, two rice, and one small additional rice. The total was just RM15+. To me, it is quite reasonable price (in comparison with, for example, Sin Nam Huat, where chicken alone may set me back RM18).

The duck rice is not too bad, though the rice itself was a bit on the dry side, but after I wet it with the salted vegetable soup and the duck gravy, it tasted quite good. My wife commented that the salted vegetable soup was kinda salty (well, what would you expect from a salted vegetable soup).

On the whole, the duck rice was not bad. I do not mind coming here for the duck rice from time to time, with the only issue being the congested roads and difficulty to find parking space. Service was good and quite prompt (despite the minor error of delivery). My wife said that the roasted meat is a bit too fatty. I think that's just our luck that we got a portion that is on the fatty side. Anyway, my wife does prepare sio3bak3 at home on occasion. If it were fired longer, then the amount of fat will be reduced.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
