"High Counter" Sculpture, Carnarvon Street

High Counter Sculpture, Carnarvon StreetHigh Counter Sculpture, Carnarvon Street (12 May 2013)

The "High Counter" Sculpture (GPS: 5.41819, 100.33623) is a steel-rod sculpture installed by the Penang Island Municipal Council in 2013. It depicts the raised countertop of a traditional Chinese pawn shop. The sculpture is installed on the wall on the eastern end of Carnarvon Street, near the junction with Chulia Street.

The pawn shop business was a method for the cash-strapped to raise short-term loans. As long as a person remains financially prudent, it is a perfectly reasonable way to get cash, although it is probably wiser not to have to resort to such an inconvenience.
