Hock Yan Kedai Makanan dan MinumanHock Yan Kedai Makanan dan Minuman (28 December 2013)

Hock Yan (GPS: 5.38889, 100.3123) is a coffee shop along Ipoh Lane in Jelutong, Penang. The coffee shop newly opened at end 2013. Among the hawker food available here include jawa mee, popiah, Hokkien mee, lor mee, chee cheong fun, koay teow thng and Hakka mee. I have tried the Hokkien mee and popiah, both of which I find to be "not too bad" by my own standard.

Hock Yan occupies a corner house. It is very busy in the morning as the front part of the coffee shop is congested with people doing their marketing.

Tim's Taste Test

25 October, 2014 Although we have noticed Hock Yan each time we visit the Jelutong Market, we don't really come here for our breakfast. Today, it so happened that the wan than mee stall that we had planned to visit was not operating, so we decided to give Hock Yan a try.

We weren't sure what's good to eat here, so I ordered the Curry Mee while my wife ordered the Jawa Mee and the Chee Cheong Fun. These are how the dishes look like:

You can tell from the first bite whether something is good or not. In this case, I found the curry mee to be too diluted. It doesn't have enough kick for curry mee. As for the chee cheong fun, the rice noodle lacks springiness ("al dente", or khiu3). My wife commented that this may be due to it having lost its freshness.

Of the three items, the nicest was the jawa mee. It wasn't particularly outstanding, but at least it met with expectation of what jawa mee should taste like.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
