Name of various herbs and spices in Penang Hokkien. Herbs are known as u3lam1 [u-lam] while spices are known as rem3pah1 [rəm-pah] in Penang Hokkien. Both are Malay loanwords that have crept into local usage through Nyonya cooking.

  2. bird-eye chilli/cili padi: (noun) huan3cio3 knia4 [huan-tsio-kiã] , ca3bai3 bu1rong2 [tsa-bai-bu-roŋ]

  3. big onion: (noun) tua3liap3charng1 [tua-liap-tshaŋ]

  4. calamansi lime: (noun) keat1la4 [kiat-la]

  5. candlenut (buah keras): (noun) buah3 ke3rai1 [buah-kə-rai]

  6. chilli: (noun) huan3cio1 [huan-tsio]

  7. chilli powder: (noun) huan3cio3hoon4 [huan-tsio-hun]

  8. cinnamon (kayu manis): (noun) kui1phoay2 [kui-phoe] , ka3yu3 ma3neh1 [ka-iu-ma-nɛ] Malay loanword)

  9. clove (bunga cengkih): (noun) teng3hniau1 [teŋ-hiãu] bu3nga3 ceng3kih1 [bu-ŋa-tsəŋ-ke]

  10. cumin (jintan putih): (noun) chor3chek3 [tshɔ-tshek]

  11. curry leaf (Murraya koenigii): (noun) ka3ri1 hiok1 [ka-li-hiok] , Ke1ling3na1 hiok1 [ke-liŋ-na-hiok]

  12. daun kesom (Persicaria odorata): (noun) cien1horm4 [tsiɛn-hɔm]

  13. dried chilli: (noun) huan3cio3 knua1 [huan-tsio-kuã]

  14. dried preserved nutmeg: (noun) lau33hau1phoay2 [lau-hau-phoe]

  17. kaffir lime leaf: (noun) thai1ko3 kam1-eh3 hiok1 [thai-ko-kam-e-hiok]

  19. lemon grass: (noun) charng3mau2 [tshaŋ-mau]

  20. lime: (noun) snui3 kam1 [suĩ-kam]

  21. mint (Mentha x piperita): (noun) po3ho2 [po-ho]

  22. nutmeg: (noun) lau33hau3 [lau-hau]

  23. pandan leaf: (noun) pan3dan4 [pan-dan] (Malay loanword)

  24. pepper: (noun) hor3cio1 [hɔ-tsio]

  25. peppercorn: (noun) hor3cio3liap1 [hɔ-tsio-liap]
