Launch of Penang Hokkien Dictionary and Learn Penang Hokkien YouTube Channel (5 July 2023) Courtesy of Eunice Ooi
The Penang Hokkien Dictionary and Learn Penang Hok>Courtesy of Eunice Ooire officially launched by caretaker Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, at the ceremony witnessed by a packed hall of Penang Hokkien enthusiasts and supporters, at the Penang Town Hall on 5 July 2023. The title of the event, which was proposed by me, was Penang Hokkien: Our Language, Our Heritage.
With the launch of the dictionary and YouTube channel, the new writing system Taiji Romanisation is recognized as the recommended writing system as it is the easiest system for Penangites to learn. Three other writing systems are also supported by the Penang Hokkien Dictionary, namely Chinese characters, Church Romanisation (also known as Pe̍h-ōe-jī or POJ) and Taiwanese Romanisation (also known as Tâi-uân Lô-má-jī or Tâi-lô). This is to make the dictionary useful to people who have learned Hokkien using any of these writing systems. They are able to cross reference between systems.
In conjunction with the launch, a press conference was held to explain the steps going forward, as we usher the language forward to be gazetted as a state heritage.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
