Penang Hokkien Linking Rhyme
[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Linking Rhyme is a Penang Hokkien word game. The players form a circle. The first person (usually someone who wins a draw through la1 la1 li4 la1 tam3 pong1) starts the game by giving a monosyllabic word. He then forms a compound disyllabic word from it. The next person takes the second syllable and forms the next compound. It goes something like this:
kam1 (orange)
kam3chooi4 (orange juice)
chooi4 (water)
chooi1seh1 (water bill)
se1 (to comb)
se3 thau3mor2 (comb hair)
mor2 (hair)
mor3pit3 (Chinese brush)
pit3 (pen)
pit1ca3 (break)
ca3 (to bomb)
ca1khi4 (morning)
The game continues until it reaches a person who cannot continue the rhyme. He loses and is out of the circle. The game then starts again with the remaining players. The player next to the loser restarts the game with a new word. One by one the players are eliminated when they are unable to continue the rhyme, with the final player to remain becoming the winner.
