Raymond Kwok (10 January, 2014)

Raymond Kwok is an expert in Baba Nyonya culture. Educated at the Methodist Boys School, where he is today honoured in their Hall of Fame, Mr Kwok was trained as a teacher. He taught at several secondary schools in Kedah as well as in Penang, and was also a freelance photo-journalist.

Mr Raymond Kwok is best known for his extensive knowledge of Nyonya culture as well as Hokkien ditties and rhymes. For over three decades, he has built up a substantial body of knowledge on the Baba Nyonya culture of Penang, and has assembled an impressive collection of antiques related to the Baba Nyonya. This includes the household items, kitchenware, clothing and accessories used by the community, as well as other Nyonya performance arts such as singing and drama.

Even at an advanced age, Mr Kwok continues to build up his knowledge on Baba Nyonya, which he generously shared. His preservation of the many Hokkien rhymes and ditties provides me a treasure trove of information for future generation to appreciate.

I am thankful to Mr Kwok for his support of my endeavour to create a standardized romanised form for writing Penang Hokkien, and has thrown his weigh behind this project.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
