Tan Choon Hoe is the author of four books on Penang Hokkien. He is credited as being the person to attempt teaching the language in printed form in recent times. He began writing those books in 2000, and published the first in 2001. Since then, his first book, originally entitled Learn to Speak Penang Hokkien Dialect, has undergone six print run, and as regarded as a local bestseller. In addition, Mr Tan has also produced three other books in Penang Hokkien, one of which to teach the language in Malay.

In addition to the books, Tan Choon Hoe is also credited with started Hokkien classes at the YMCA, where he taught for some time before he had to pass the class to another teacher due to lack of time. The classes are still continuing till this day.

I have had the privilege of getting to know Tan Choon Hoe after I began working on my romanization system. After we got to know each other, we began embarking on re-writing Mr Tan's books using the new romanization system, which we hope to be completed one day in the future.

In the following videos, I have recorded Tan Choon Hoe has he personally speaks about his books.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
