Hon Kei Food Corner 汉记小食店 (GPS: 5.41906, 100.33262) is a Chinese open-air restaurant on Kampung Malabar in George Town, Penang. My wife read a post about it (in Facebook or elsewhere, I don't recall), and suggested that we go there to give it a try.
Hon Kei Food Corner offers cooked to order soups to be taken with porridge, vermicelli, noodles, thin noodles and mixed noodles. There are various basic ingredients according to your choice including fish meat and fish head, either fried or unfried, as well as prawns and pork. You may also choose various pork items including meat balls, streaky meat, intestine, minced pork, brain, kidney, heart, liver and tripe. The soup may also be ordered with white rice as well as yam rice.
For our first visit, my wife ordered noodles for herself while I chose yam rice. She was feeling a bit adventurous and decided to have every pork item available that day, so in her bowl, there is also brain, kidney, tripe, intestine and liver. Mine is a much reduced version. It was pork soup with bitter gourd, minced meat, liver, intestine and streaky meat. For drinks, we ordered two glasses of iced Horlicks.
It was the first time my wife and I had pork brain. She didn't quite like it. Brain was very soft. I didn't find it too awful, but I wasn't fond of the liver, and I transferred them to her bowl. As for the kidney, neither of us liked it. Kidney had a strong urine smell and it put us off. My wife's bowl cost RM9.30, my bowl was RM8.50, but my yam rice is charged separately, at RM2.50. The two iced Horlicks was RM7.40. The total bill was RM27.70 with GST included in as RM1.57.
My wife didn't feel so well after taking this meal. It probably did not agree with her. I asked her, why did she order all the innards if they are going to make her squimish. She said that it is their signature item, so she was curious to try it once. Having tried, I think next time we will keep ourselves to the meat and minced meat, if there is a next time. But don't let that put you off. Take a look at the photos, and if you like food like this, give it a try.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
