Lunch at Hua Hee Restaurant on 15 January, 2017

Hua Hee RestaurantHua Hee Restaurant (15 January 2017)

I visited Hua Hee Restaurant 歡喜中餐廳 (GPS: 5.31989, 100.26863) for the first time on 15 January, 2017. My wife and I were there, to join our blogger friend CK Lam and a few other bloggers.

It was a most sumptuous meal shared between eight adults and one child. The items we had included the Salmon Yee Sang (RM88.00), Red Snapper in Beansauce (RM60.00, according to market price), 1kg of Chili Crab (market price), 1kg of Butter Crab with Salted Egg (market price), Nestum Prawn (medium-size plate, RM40.00), Kong Poh Mantis Shrimp (small, RM18.00), Pandan Leaf Chicken (RM3.50 per piece, minimum order 4 pieces), Homemade Crispy Beancurd (RM2.00 per piece, minimum order 6 pieces), Baby French Beans with Salted Egg (small, RM15.00) and Petai Fried Rice (big, RM22).

How do I like the food? To me, they are all excellent. But having said that, I have to acknowledge that I am one of those easy-to-please people, where food is concerned.

We started our lunch by tossing the Salmon Yee Sang. The raw salmon fillets were arranged around the platter to form a flower, with the rest of the Yee Sang ingredients in the middle.

I enjoyed the crabs, though it was so messy eating crabs. Both crab dishes are equally good, though my preference is the Butter Crab, which I had less often. I also enjoyed the mantao paos which is eaten with the crab dishes, or to be exact, with their gravy. The Nestum Prawns were also very nice, but as with most of the food I had on a food review session, it was already cold when I ate it. Not the issue with the restaurant, as it was our own fault that we took such a long time photographing the food.

The Red Snapper is fresh and its flesh soft, meaning it wasn't dry or overcooked. For me, the Red Snapper is cooked just right.

The Petai Fried Rice has an aroma that reminded me of the fried rice I had, when I was small. Some of my fellow bloggers commented that the fried rice has too much of a smokey aroma. I do agree that I can detect the smokiness but am fine with that. The portion was too much for any of us to finish.

Everything goes well with salted eggs - at least, that's my opinion - so I enjoyed the Baby French Beans. The saltiness of the duck yolk went well with the crispiness of the French beans.

It was a long and satisfying lunch. By the time we left the restaurant, it was already 2:30pm in the afternoon. Both my wife and I felt very full from this wonderful meal.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
