IKEA Batu Kawan (GPS: 5.23387, 100.43993) is the fourth IKEA store in Malaysia. It is located next to the Bandar Cassia Interchange, and is owned by Aspen-Ikano, a joint venture company between Ikano Pte Ltd, the franchisee for IKEA in Malaysia, with local developer Aspen Vision Land Sdn Bhd. The store opened to business on 14 March, 2019. It occupies 30 acres out of a 245-acre plot at Batu Kawan, near the toll plaza of the Second Penang Bridge . Aspen-Ikano purchased the land from the Penang Development Corporation for RM484 million. The rest of the land is being developed by Aspen Group in phases, and is known as Aspen Vision City or AVC. The second phase of the development will see a new shopping mall similar to Ikano Power Centre occupying 45 acres, with other developments planned out in future phases occupying 170 acres.

Visiting IKEA Batu Kawan

From the main road, Lebuhraya Bandar Cassia, turn left to Persiaran Cassia Barat 4, then turn left again into the driveway for IKEA Batu Kawan. The store has a two-storey car park entered from the ground and Level 1. Entrance to the store itself is on Level 2, reached via escalator and lifts. As with other IKEA stores, IKEA Batu Kawan is designed with a one-way layout. Visitors start at Level 2, going through the showrooms where gallery after gallery displays different parts of the house.

Items displayed in the showrooms are given a code and a name. Customers are to note down this information for collection at the Market Hall or warehouse afterwards. Completing the Level 2 showroom circuit, visitors arrive at the IKEA Restaurant & Cafe where various traditional Swedish food is available. Beverages are available on unlimited refill.

A flight of escalators take visitors down to Level 1, which holds the Market Hall, where various items are arranged according to different parts of the home. The final section is the furniture warehouse where bigger items are available for retrieval in flat pack form. Just before reaching the payment counters, there is a department where returned, damaged or formerly showcased items are available for sale at a discount, but has a no-returns policy.

The Star reports Ikano Pte Ltd, the owner of the IKEA franchise in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, confirms that IKEA Penang will open in 2018. It will occupy a 24-acre site in Batu Kawan. Ikano Pte Ltd partners with Aspen Group to purchase a 245-acre site there from the Penang Development Corporation, to be developed into Aspen Vision City. Ikano, which has a 20% stake in the partnership, will wholely own IKEA Penang.
