Alappuzha (formerly Alleppey; Malayalam: ആലപ്പുഴ) is a coastal city on the southern part of the state of
Kerala, India. It covers 1,414 sq mi (546 sq mi) and has a population of 174,000 people (2012 estimate), making it the 6th largest city in the state.
Alappuzha is flanked by Vembanadu Lake into which flow six major rivers. The city is noted for its canals, which are today a tourist attraction, enabling it to claim the title of Venice of the East. As with much of Kerala, the people of Alappuzha speak mostly Malayalam.
Human habitation in Alappuzha has been traced back to the time of antiquity. Trades have been established between this part of India with the ancient Greeks and Romans. According to tradition, apostle Thomas is said to have also landed here, establishing a church at Kokkamangalam.
Planning your trip to Alappuzha
You can reach Alappuzha by train from Kochi as well as from Bengaluru, Chennai,
Kozhikode, Mumbai and
Thiruvananthapuram.
The nearest airport is in Kochi. If you arrive by plane, you can take a taxi from the airport to Alappuzha for around र 450.
