Amravati (अमरावती) is the seventh most populous metropolitan area in the state of Maharashtra, India. The headquarters of Amravati district, it covers 270 sq km (100 sq mi) and has a population of 647,000 people.
The city of Amravati is said to be derived from the Ambadevi Temple, its name appearing on the stone inscription at the base of the marble statue of a Hindu deity dating back to 1097. The name is said to mean "abode of immortals". The city was abandoned in the 13th century due to a severe drought. Though many of its people moved back in the subsequent years, the drought caused a drop in its overall population.
