Amritsar (Pubjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ) is a city in Punjab, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Amritsar district. The city has a population of 1.5 million people within the Amritsar district which has 3.7 million inhabitants.

Amritsar is the site of Harmandir Sahib, better known as the Golden Temple of Amritsar, the spiritual and cultural center of Sikhism.

Amritsar was founded by Guru Ram Das in 1574. Through much of its initial history, many of the Sikh leaders were captured and tortured by the Mughals, who attacked and attempted to occupy Amritsar on many occasions.

Today modern Amritsar is a center for medicare in northern India. It is also a major local tourist destination, and is an important center for handicrafts, carpets and fabrics.

Most visitors fly to Amritsar from Delhi. The Raja Sansi International Airport is 11 km from downtown Amritsar. You can take a taxi from the airport to the city.

Planning your travel within Amritsar

The most practical way is to take a cycle rickshaw or an auto rickshaw. Hire them for the whole day to visit all the sights swiftly.
