Bellary (Kannada: ಬೆಳಗಾವಿ) is a city on the eastern part of
Karnataka state, India. It is near the border with the state of Andhra Pradesh. It has a population of 410,000 people (2012 estimate) within an area of 82 sq km (32 sq mi).
Archaeological sites in Bellary provide evidence of human habitation here going back to the Neolithic period. This includes the Sanganakallu settlement, which is one of the largest neolithic sites in the region. The city that we know today is also quite ancient, and has been ruled by various dynasties over the centuries.
Bellary was part of the Madras Presidency in 1901, and would remain so for the next half a century until 1953, when areas with predominantly Kannada-speaking population was transferred to Mysore state, which became Karnataka state in 1973.

Bellary is connected by Indian National Highway 67. If you are coming from Bengaluru, take Highway 7 heading north till Gooty, then continue on Highway 67 heading west till you reach Bellary.
