Bilaspur is a small town on the southern part of
Himachal Pradesh, India. Not to be confused with
Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, this town in Himachal Pradesh has a population of 13,500 people (2012 estimate) and is 673 m (2,208 ft) above sea level. Summers here are pleasant while winters can be bitterly cold and foggy. Winter temperature regularly drops below freezing point, especially at night.
The history of Bilaspur goes back to the 7th century, when it was established as the seat of the state of Kahlur. It was known as Kahlur but was reestablished as Bilaspur in 1663.
In the run up to independent India, Bilaspur was formerly part of Punjab until the Punjab Hill States Agency was formed in 1936. This is the precursor of the present states of Himachal Pradesh and
Uttarakhand. Bilaspur became part of Himachal Pradesh on 1 July, 1954.
Today Bilaspur has developed its tourism industry. It is particularly renowed for sports such as paragliding and whitewater rafting.
