Bongaigaon (Assamese: বঙাইগাঁও, Bengali: বনগাইগাঁও) is a city in the state of Assam, in northeastern India. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the Bongaigaon District. Bongaigaon covers 1,724 sqa km (666 sq mi) and has a population of 733,000 people (2012 estimate). It is the fifth largest city in Assam after Guwahati,
Jorhat,
Dibrugarh and
Silchar.
Bongaigaon district was created in 1989 from parts of Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts. It comprises mostly the area that was formerly the Bijni Kingdom, which dates back to 1671, and a small part of Sidli Kingdom.
