Chandigarh (चण्डीगढ़, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ) is the state capital of both Punjab and Haryana. And in a uniquely Indian arrangement, it belongs to neither state, but is instead a Union Territory, within what is known as the Chandigarh Capital Region. The region includes the cities of Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur.

Chandigarh covers 114 sq km (44 sq mi) and has a population of 901,000 (2011 estimate) while the entire Chandigarh Capital Region has a population of 1.2 million people.
Chandigarh stands as the first city in India to be designed from ground up. It was established in 1953, a few year after the partition of British India into the nations of India and Pakistan in 1947. The Government of India under prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru hired French architect Le Corbusier to plan the city.
The state of Haryana was created on 1 Novmber 1966 out of the eastern part of Punjab, to be a majority Hindi-speaking state, while the remainder Punjab remains a Punjabi-speaking state.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
